Star Wars Miniatures
The Star Wars Miniatures collection offers a great board game that doesn't require too much time or space to play. The miniatures are also exactly the right size for use with the Star Wars Roleplaying Game, which I would highly recommend. The old roleplaying system was made by West End Games, which I haven't tried.

5 out of 5 stars The single best Star Wars RPG approach ever   June 1, 2008

I think the authors really hit the nail in the head with this. It is the best Star Wars RPG I've ever. Almost every single aspect of the movies was adequately modeled in the rules, which remained, surpringly, simple.

5 out of 5 stars Well Worth The Purchase   May 28, 2008

As you doubtlessly know by now, the Star Wars Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook, Saga Edition is the latest iteration of the Star Wars D20 RPG.

Others reviwers have gone more in-depth, so I'll keep this concise. In a nutshell, this is a vastly superior game to its D20 predecessor. The cumbersome skills and bloated Feats/Force Feats are retooled, leaving a more elegant, simpler, yet versatile and satisfying system for PCs to work with. The races are streamlined and balanced. The classes are finally each useful, unique, and evenly matched powerwise; even when it comes to the Force, other classes have the chance to compete with Jedis now. And higher level NPCs are a cinch to design: no more spending an hour calculating skill ranks, prerequisite feats, etc.

Combat goes much more smoothly as well. My first time running a firefight was easy, quick, and fast-paced without sacrificing tactical decisions on the part the PCs or my NPCs. The only gripe I have is the assumption that GMs will be using miniatures and tiled battlegrids for combat; while you can do a purely narrative combat, the system really is designed around the use of minis.

But even so, this is a great game. You can just as easily run a fast-paced action campaign as a more thoughtful, immersive one.

3 out of 5 stars It keeps improving   April 21, 2008

I have played most of the Star Wars RPGs ever published, and I must admit that this version is one of the best, even compared to WestEndGames'.

The character classes from previous d20 versions have been redesigned to be better mixed in the same character, and the powers of the Force have been given more flexibility (you can use them quite frequently without pushing your character near death). Another nice addition are the "talents", special stunts you can pick up for your character, and which spice the classes and gives more width to characters.

However, there are drawbacks. The art is from other products, and some good ideas look half-baked, as if they were in a hurry to meet the dead-line of the editor. The rules almost force you to use miniatures, and a lot of tactical gaming, what is great for miniatures fans, but makes combat boring for role-playing fans. It also applies the same combat system to the starships, what gives a very unsatisfactory result.

I give it 3 stars because any Star Wars fan will be delighted, but it is not as good as it could have been.

3 out of 5 stars Editor needs fired   April 1, 2008

The long anticipation for this book ended in a fizzle. While there is no doubt that the rules revision had some more streamline ways of dealing with situations available, it also made a few things more difficult to understand. However, the most frustrating part of the book is its lack of content and eye sore typos.

Jedi are horridly unbalanced for game play. The pre-generated adversaries, starships and vehicles for the Game Master are generic and too few. This is of course so that they can sell further supplements. But for the price, you should get more. Even more rediculous are the errors and typos running rampant through the book. While Im no dictionary myself, even I could have edited this thing better. Some examples:

The prerequisites for the feats "Rapid Shot" and "Rapid Strike" are reversed. The Import and exports for Bespin are reversed. The misspellings are WAY too numerous to list. It leaves the reader spending way too much time trying to figure out what the authors were TRYING to say, instead of playing the game. Once again, for such a prestigious company and a high price tag, I find this appalling. The [...] website has a nice long list of corrections to their product, once again spending time trying to figure out what SHOULD have been written in the first place and less time playing the game. But even the list on their website is far from complete.

I know, Im horrible at spelling myself without an auto spell-checker, but Im not being paid to write this review, nor am I charging you to read it!

All in all, if youve played D&D or the last edition of this game, go for it. If youve never played an RPG before, this one is going to make your head spin. However, its still far better than the revised core rulebook. Hands down.

I would even go so far as to say that everyone who purchased this book should get a free book with free shipping on a revised edition that is more complete and fixes the typos.

4 out of 5 stars Best way to improve on a game that had two previous versions!   March 23, 2008

This is the game I wanted when I heard Star Wars was heading for the D20 system. It eliminated the cumbersome skill set and streamlined combat to an almost elegant flow. I admit I was very skeptical after buying the TWO books that came before but the additions are well worth the purchase. Only downside is...I hate the book size. It's awkward at best and impossible to make decent character sheets from and it sticks out from the rest of the books in my collection. Maybe a selling point for them but a curse for any gamer who has a shelf dedicated to gaming books. All in all very pleased with the content, but please give me an adult sized book...

Best maps for...
...3 and 4 players. In my group we frequently play 3-way and 4-way battles just to get more games in the time we have. Some maps are just downright awful for 3 players while others it is more about who gets to pick side last that gets the squeeze. Just wondering if anyone has put some thought...

I've seen Garindan make more than a few squad lists: how do you effectively use him without super stealth? How many combined fires do you need to pull off to get your 12 points out of him? And does the 10 extra damage even out the disadvantages it has compared to Jawa Scout (unique and thus...
